The Fragrance of His Presence

How does one manage to smell a particular fragrance in the absence of its physical source?

I have experienced the smell of roses to varying degrees; in a worship service, when my Father died and at other odd times.

It filled the living room on the night before my Dad’s memorial service, and no there were no flowers anywhere.

Nonetheless some experiences just last month took it to a whole new level; sitting outside one Saturday night I was overwhelmed by the fragrance of beds of roses in an immense garden.

It was so intense that I just breathed it in and felt a calmness I couldn’t describe.

I am a Christian so this does resonate with me on a spiritual level.

A couple of nights later the daughter and I were sitting outside having a glass of wine and listening to music when the same thing happened more powerful than before.

She was aware of the pungent smell of roses too, we discussed it in fact.

One thing I noticed the scent hung suspended in the air for what seemed like a long time, maybe half an hour before fading slightly only to return in strong waves and linger.

The aroma wasn’t confined to a certain area only, like around the table we were seated, I got up and walked further down and it seemed to be right at my side as I moved.

My daughter discovered the same thing.

Eventually she said; let’s put on some worship music, so that’s what we did, singing along with outstretched hands, palms upward; an awesome evening was had by all.

This was not the only time my daughter experienced the phenomenon; the first time was indoors on the eve of my Dad’s memorial when I was with her and a second time when she was outside on her own.

Being the type of person who always likes answers as well as confirmation I came across this verse which I’ll paraphrase; I breathe My people with the scent of My Presence, you shall be greatly comforted as you inhale My heavenly mist and smell roses. Yes dear one, roses. My scent will linger upon you and this will assure you that I have not left you nor forsaken you.

Song 4:16 NKJV

Awake, O north wind, and come, O south! Blow upon my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits.

Images of paradise lost………..and regained.
