Secularism VS Christianity; and the Clash of the Titans.
Not Kansas Anymore part.2.
In a post Christian world one thing stands out and it is this. Secularism is a religion; no, make that a cluster of religions. The same goes for humanism. In fact they are both interchangeable terms. This is a religion with its own metaphysics, practices and symbols, but most of all its own ethics. The secular framework can be described as the worship of immanence. And seeing it is a religion, yes worship is the correct word.
It has been argued that religion never disappears from society; it just changes over time. From this we gauge that it is impossible to have a non- religious society. Secularism has assumed Christian values and scenarios at times; all to suit their aims. Although it should be obvious that their religion is not Christian.
Then there is this thinking that to qualify as a religion there must be a transcendent being in a supernatural realm; which is false. It is entirely a western notion if you must know. Neither does it fit the pattern for many other religions.
Now for the burning question. Do secularists want Christianity to change and are they willing to work towards this end? Well yes, and no.
There is always this fiddling as we know. And it is everywhere. Ever get the feeling they try too hard to bring the Church into line to mirror their politics.
Look at it this way; their philosophy informs their politics and combined equals their belief-system which equals their religion. Does this make sense?
They don’t mind there being another religion they just don’t want one that will compete with theirs.
What they want is for Christians to adapt their faith to conform to their secular religion. Do you get it now?
With the secular worship of immanence the Will or desire, is their way to discern truth. What is ironic is this makes the Will the new transcendence. Have you heard the phrase; speak will to power?
Remember the words of Hume; reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions. And if you don’t like to think of it as passions well don’t worry we will call it another name; like rights. As Pascal lays it out; the heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of.
To simplify and cut through the fog read as; we want what we want because we want it. This idea of the will being central is traced all the way from Hume to the post-modernist philosophers; and beyond.
Wait there is more it is called syncretism. It combines secular metaphysics with Christian metaphysics to end on this note. That human sexual desire is given by God.
Are we witnessing the collapse of Christianity in the west, and can this state of affairs can be laid at the door of the religion of Secularism?
Will Christian ethics give the right of way to secularism not too long from now. Meanwhile; the world has no idea of what is about to hit just beyond the horizon.
Some may scoff at the idea of secularism as a religion, but just hold back the mirth for a moment.
Maybe your failure is you bought into the claims secularism makes about itself. When what you should have done is measure their claims through the lens of secular religion.
