A recent poll questioned Americans on some of their attitudes in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

They were given the chance to put themselves in Ukrainians shoes, and it got a bit interesting.

They were asked what they would do if they faced the same options Ukrainians had; those being stay and fight or leave the country.

A majority (55 percent) 70 percent of them men, say they would stay and fight, while 38 percent say they would leave the country.

From between 25 to 68 percent of Republicans, and from 36 to 57 percent of Independents; were prepared to stay and fight.

On the other hand while 40 percent of Democrats would stay and fight; a whopping 52 percent would opt to leave the country.

Only 38% of Black Americans would fight; compared to 61% of Hispanics.

And among Americans from 18–34, the prime age for military service; 48% would run away and leave just 45% to stay and fight.

While Ukrainians have fled their country to become refugees in other states; they are mostly women and children.

You find that many men are evacuating their families then going back to Ukraine to fight; at least that is what reports say.

One Blogger demands to know the reasons that so many young/younger American men are not willing to fight.

He says; I’m not sure this is a sign of Americans’ pacifism. Principled pacifists might not fight, but they do not necessarily run away.

He posits that all this talk of running away suggests something about the character of Americans today; and not in a good way.

He concludes by saying; Americans of all ages, ethnicities, and political persuasions came through in World War II. Why not now? What has changed? Is this a failure of courage, of patriotism, or something else?

Some of the remarks by his usual commentariat, and from quite a few outsiders as well, were illuminating; while others not so much.

Let’s take a look.

Said one; our cultural elites have spent years drumming into the young what a terrible, racist, corrupt, unjust place the US is. Why would those raised under that think it was worth fighting for?

Well he does make a good point!

Fortunately, the South is full of people who’ve been waiting for Red Dawn their entire lives. Also a good point!

Said another; the division that we see in America is our biggest threat.

I don’t think you can predict. When the chips are down, so to speak, people tend to act in ways that even they would not have anticipated.

The Maybe Not So Great Generation.

Maybe if we hadn’t been fighting a
constant stream of wasteful, unnecessary wars for the past 50 plus years’ people wouldn’t be so jaded about the notion.
