Okay this is a little strange, topics like this one are normally aired by The Sun and fringe news outlets but here we have MSN, The Guardian even Science Daily wading in on the subject matter.

A helicopter pilot and crew on a flying wildlife mission discovered a mystery metal monolith in a remote southern part of Red Rock desert in Utah just last week.

Not wanting to encourage curious people into making trips and getting themselves lost in the process, authorities didn’t reveal the exact location of the find.

Evidently, this did not stop the enthusiasts as just 48 hours after the news broke people shared their own pictures on Instagram.

Among them was David Surber, 33, a former US army infantry officer, who drove for six hours through the night to find it after learning of its locale from a Reddit post.

He shared the object’s location on Instagram saying; “Awesome journey out to the monolith today, regardless of who built it or where it came from it was a positive escape from today’s world and something for people to rally behind and enjoy together.”

He described the object as made of aluminum with three pieces riveted together.

The Guardian attributed the object as the work of sculptor the late John McCracken although others have since denied it.

The Theories

Estimated to be about 3 meters, or between 10 and 12 feet high, the object’s been compared to the monolith featured in the 2001 film; A Space Odyssey.

Many insist it is the doing of extraterrestrials.

Putting artists and aliens on notice Utah’s department of public safety (DPS) said; “it’s illegal to install structures or art on federally managed public lands without authorization, and this is true, no matter what planet you from.

Reddit users pointed out the lines at the base of the object suggest a rock saw was used to position the object in the ground while it appeared to be held together with screws, dispelling the theory it could be one large hunk of metal.

Scientists took issue with the word monolith used by Utah officials to describe the object.

A monolith is technically a geographic feature made of stone, while this slab appears to be made of metal.

Merriam Webster’s dictionary, however, allows for a looser interpretation of monolith as “a massive structure.”
