Biden Fears NATO Member Countries Will Bail When it comes to Ukraine.
Biden’s worst fear is that the US will be left to carry the can if NATO member countries refuse to commit to military action in Eastern Europe; as they worry there will be consequences to pay by a hostile Russia.
He needs the unanimous vote of all 30 NATO countries to get the go ahead for troop deployment.
The impression is that Biden will go it alone if he has to, or at least in tandem with his old pal the UK.
The US thinks Russia will invade Ukraine by early to middle February; by the latest. Against this backdrop, they want to prepare as soon as possible.
Some countries who could stand in the way of NATO military action are said to be; France, Germany, Turkey and Hungary.
If anything, many European countries are nervous about more US bases in the region; while they worry if this will affect their relationship with Russia. Most of all they do not want a war in spite of all the sabre rattling from all sides.
Amid warnings by security experts that Russia may launch covert attacks inside Ukraine; a young Ukrainian National Guard conscript opened fire on a military factory in the east of the country, killing five and wounding five more; with a rifle he had just been handed. He then fled the scene. The search for him continues.
Biden has threatened the Nord Stream Two gas pipeline will not go ahead if Russia invades, although how he plans to do this without German cooperation is not clear. And Germany has remained mum on the topic.
He also said the US would not bow to Russia’s core demand that Ukraine not be allowed to join NATO.
Meanwhile Ukraine continues to downplay the Russian threat as they do not want to spread panic.
